Porte Saint-André

Best-preserved Roman gate in Gaul, still with its medieval tower

The Porte Saint-André, built around 15 BC on the eastern edge of Augustodunum, is one of the best-preserved Roman city gates anywhere in Gaul. The gate has four openings at road level — two large arched passages for wheeled traffic and two smaller ones for pedestrians — with an arcaded gallery above and a medieval watchtower rising from one end, added centuries after the Roman construction.

Autun's original Roman walls enclosed a city of around 200 hectares, rivalling Lyon in size. Of the four original gates only two remain: the Porte Saint-André to the east and the Porte d'Arroux to the north, about a ten-minute walk away. Both are freely accessible, day and night, and the traffic still passes through the Roman arches just as it did two thousand years ago.
