The Marché aux Vins is the most convenient place in Beaune to taste systematically through the main Côte d'Or appellations without booking a dozen separate domaine visits. It operates as a self-guided tasting through the atmospheric barrel-filled cellars of a former 15th-century church, working through around 20 wines from a single producer (Patriarche Père et Fils, one of Burgundy's largest négociants).
The experience suits visitors who want to understand the hierarchy of Burgundy — premier cru versus grand cru, Côte de Beaune versus Côte de Nuits — in a systematic way. More serious collectors should book ahead at smaller domaines such as Joseph Drouhin or Louis Latour, but the Marché aux Vins is an excellent starting point. The entrance fee includes the tastevin to take home.
