When to Go

The most atmospheric time to visit Beaune is September and October during the harvest. The vineyards are alive with pickers, the cave entrances smell of fermenting juice, and every domaine is busy. It is not a time when producers welcome casual drop-ins, but the town itself is at its most energetic.

November brings the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction, held on the third weekend of the month as part of the Trois Glorieuses festival. It is the world's most famous charity wine auction and a three-day celebration that draws buyers and visitors from around the world. Prices during this weekend are predictably eye-watering.

July and August are the peak tourist months — the town is busy, producers are doing cave tours, and the evenings are warm and long. The Beaune International Baroque Music Festival takes place in late July.

Winter (December to February) is quiet and cold; many smaller domaines close. But Beaune's restaurants are as good as ever, and the absence of tour groups makes it easier to have an actual conversation with a producer.
