The Musée du Vin de Bourgogne occupies the former Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne in the old town and traces the history of Burgundian winemaking from Roman times to the present. The collection is more comprehensive than exciting — it is primarily tools, barrels, presses, and cooperage equipment — but it gives useful context for what you are seeing in the vineyards.
The most interesting rooms cover the development of the négociant system and the role of Cistercian monks in establishing the grand cru classifications during the Middle Ages. A short film on the geology of the Côte d'Or escarpment explains why the limestone soils here produce wine of a character found nowhere else. Included in the main Beaune city pass, which also covers several other museums in town.
