Rue de la Boucherie

The Rue de la Boucherie is a short medieval street in the old Château quarter that preserves its character more completely than almost anywhere else in central Limoges. It was historically the street of the butchers — the Confrérie de la Boucherie, a medieval guild of remarkable longevity, maintained their shops here from the Middle Ages through to the 20th century, and the half-timbered buildings along the street date largely from the 16th to 18th centuries.

The street is now pedestrianised and mostly given over to restaurants and antique shops, but the physical fabric is authentic. A small chapel at one end — the Chapelle Saint-Aurélien — belongs to the butchers' guild and still holds regular services for confrérie members. This is one of the few stretches of the old town that gives a genuine sense of pre-industrial Limoges.
