Epernay's great attraction is the Avenue de Champagne, a single elegant kilometre lined with the offices and mansions of the great champagne houses. Beneath the road run more than a hundred kilometres of chalk tunnels storing several hundred million bottles, and most of the major houses offer guided cellar tours. The town itself is small enough to see in an afternoon, but the surrounding vineyard villages — Hautvillers, the Cote des Blancs — easily justify a longer stay.
