Filitosa is one of Corsica's most important prehistoric sites, famous for its carved statue-menhirs set among olive trees and granite. The figures, some with stylised faces and weapons, give the site an immediacy that many prehistoric landscapes lack.
Although it sits outside Ajaccio, it is a strong day trip for travellers interested in Corsica before Genoese towers and Napoleonic history. The museum and walking route make the site understandable without needing specialist archaeological knowledge.
