Ajaccio's old town and waterfront are compact and best explored on foot. Most sights — Maison Bonaparte, the cathedral, the Fesch Museum, Place Foch, and the covered market — are within ten minutes' walk of each other.
By bus: The city has a modest bus network run by Tiss'Bus. Line 5 runs along the waterfront and out towards the airport; line 8 connects the city centre with Campo dell'Oro Airport. Tickets cost around €1.50 and can be bought on board. Services are infrequent outside the centre.
By taxi: Taxis are available at the port, the airport, and outside the main hotels. A fare from the port to the city centre is short and cheap; taxis are also the practical way to reach the Îles Sanguinaires viewpoints after dark when the boat tours have finished.
By car: A car is essential if you plan to explore beyond Ajaccio — the beaches to the south, the Cinarca vineyards, and day trips to Filitosa all require one. Rental agencies are represented at the airport. Parking in the centre is metered; the waterfront car parks fill up in summer.
On foot: The Route des Sanguinaires, a 12 km coastal road west of the city, can be cycled or walked in sections and offers good views of the gulf. Bikes can be rented in the city centre.
