Maison Bonaparte

Napoleon's birthplace, now a furnished period museum

Address Rue Saint-Charles, Ajaccio

The house where Napoleon was born on 15 August 1769, now a national museum administered by the Centre des monuments nationaux. The building was pillaged by Corsican nationalist Pasquale Paoli's forces in 1793 when the Bonaparte family fled to mainland France, and later partly reconstructed. The rooms are furnished in late 18th-century style; Napoleon's cradle is displayed on the first floor. The visit is short but atmospheric.
