Lantern of Augustus

Roman harbour daymark from ancient Forum Julii

The Lantern of Augustus is a Roman survival from Frejus's time as Forum Julii, when the town had a major harbour. The coastline has shifted, so the old harbour marker now stands inland, a useful reminder that Roman Frejus looked very different from the modern resort town.

The remains are modest, but they work well as part of a Roman Frejus walk with the amphitheatre, aqueduct, and old gates. It is a site for travellers who enjoy reading a city through fragments rather than expecting a complete monument.
