Day Trips

The Seine-et-Marne and the wider Île-de-France offer several obvious extensions from Meaux. Versailles is an hour by train via Paris and the obvious choice for anyone combining Meaux with a classical palace. Fontainebleau is reachable in about ninety minutes by train (change at Paris-Gare de Lyon) and makes a pleasing contrast: a forest and hunting château rather than a formal garden, and markedly less crowded than Versailles. Within the immediate region, Provins — a perfectly preserved medieval market town about 50 km southeast of Meaux, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is worth a half-day by regional train. The Champagne towns of Épernay and Reims are about 90–120 km to the east; Épernay in particular, as the capital of Champagne and home to the Avenue de Champagne lined with maisons de champagne, pairs well with a morning in Meaux before continuing east.
