A proper French café-bar on the market square that functions as a local institution: retired men playing cards in the morning, shoppers stopping for a coffee after the Saturday market, office workers having a glass after work on Friday. The patron has run the place for years and knows all his regulars by name. The Kronenbourg is served correctly cold, the house wine is honest, and the croque-monsieur at lunch is better than it has any right to be. A place to observe Meaux going about its business rather than a destination in itself, but that is exactly what it sets out to be.
