Château de la Petite Malmaison

Joséphine's private botanical retreat where she grew rare plants from around the world.

Tucked away on the edge of the Malmaison estate, this small pavilion was Joséphine's personal hothouse and botanical retreat. She used it to cultivate exotic plants brought back from French expeditions — many of them new to European horticulture. The heated greenhouse (one of the first of its kind in France) allowed her to grow tropical species year-round.

The building was restored in the early 2000s and is now open for visits, though on a more limited schedule than the main château. The interior retains its neoclassical decoration, and temporary exhibitions on botanical art and garden history are held here regularly. It's a five-minute walk from the main château — easy to combine if you're spending the day on the estate.
