Queen's Apartment

The Appartement de la Reine is the suite of rooms on the south side of the palace that served the queens of France from Marie-Thérèse, wife of Louis XIV, through Marie Antoinette, who lived here until 1789. The rooms are largely presented as they appeared under Marie Antoinette, with much of the original furniture restored or reconstructed after Revolutionary dispersal.

The Queen's Bedroom is the most visited room: the gilded alcove bed where Marie Antoinette slept, and where 19 royal children were born in public — childbirth at Versailles was officially a spectator event, the crowd pressing forward to confirm that no substitution was made. On the night of 6 October 1789, Marie Antoinette fled this room through a hidden door as a revolutionary mob broke into the palace.

The Queen's Apartment is the symmetrical counterpart to the King's Apartment but has a different character — more intimate in scale, more decorative, with the delicate furniture and lacquerwork that Marie Antoinette preferred. The sequence of the Guard Room, Antechamber, Nobles' Room, Antechamber of the Grand Couvert, and Bedchamber follows a similar logic to the king's rooms: every room a filter, controlling access and making approach a matter of rank.
