Gallery of Coaches

The Galerie des Carrosses occupies the ground floor of the south wing and displays the royal coaches used for coronations, royal weddings, and state occasions. It is one of the less-visited parts of the palace complex and all the better for it — you can actually look at things here without being pushed along by a crowd.

The star piece is the coronation coach of Charles X, an extraordinary gilded and painted carriage used at his 1825 coronation at Reims — the last traditional royal coronation of a French king. Nearby are the coaches used for the weddings of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, and a number of earlier royal carriages. The sheer scale of these vehicles, designed to make an impression at slow walking pace through city streets, is striking.

The collection was assembled by Louis-Philippe and is housed in buildings that were originally the stables attached to the south wing. Opening hours and access can differ from the main palace, so check before visiting.
