Musical Fountains Show

The Grandes Eaux Musicales are the Musical Fountains shows that run on Saturdays, Sundays, and certain public holidays from early April to late October. All the major fountains in the gardens operate simultaneously, their jets choreographed to Baroque music played through speakers along the garden paths. It costs around €10 on top of the standard garden ticket and transforms the experience.

The difference between seeing the gardens on a non-fountain day and a fountain day is substantial. The basins and jets change the scale of everything — the Apollo fountain with its horses seems to move, the Latona fountain becomes the crowded, chaotic myth it represents, and the Grand Canal's long reflection is punctuated at intervals by rising columns of water. The gardens were designed with the fountains in mind; without them they are beautiful but incomplete.

On summer Saturday evenings, the Grandes Eaux Nocturnes add firelight, illuminated fountains, and fireworks to the programme — a completely different spectacle, much more theatrical. Both shows require booking in advance, especially for summer weekends.

A story
The music programme for the Grandes Eaux uses only composers who actually played at Versailles — Lully, Couperin, Charpentier, Rameau. Lully staged the first great fountain shows here in the 1670s, composing the music to match the jets. The show today is in direct continuity with those original performances.
