Fort Vauban stands above central Alès, a reminder that the Cévennes were once politically and religiously troublesome country. The fort itself is plain and controlled, but its position gives a useful view over the town and valley.
It is worth the short climb for orientation. From here Alès looks exactly like what it is: a valley town at the edge of hill country, with roads and railways pulling travellers toward the mountains.
