Alès is best used as a gateway with a few worthwhile town stops. Visit the mining museum, walk up to Fort Vauban, look into the cathedral, and save time for the river and the museums. The wider reward is outside town: Anduze, the Bambouseraie, the Gardon valleys, and the first folds of the Cévennes.
