The Mine Temoin is Alès' most distinctive sight: a former training mine turned museum, with underground galleries explaining the coal industry that shaped the town and much of the surrounding Cévennes. It is practical, physical history rather than polished nostalgia.
Tours are guided and may vary by season, so check times before going. Even if mines are not usually your thing, this one helps explain why Alès feels different from the prettier villages around it.
