Pont du Diable

The Pont du Diable is Ceret's medieval bridge over the Tech, a single bold stone arch that looks almost too elegant for the narrow river gorge beneath it. For centuries it was one of the great crossings into the Vallespir.

Walk down from the old town rather than just driving past. The bridge is best appreciated from below and from the path along the river, where the arch frames the valley and the foothills beyond.

A story
The bridge's name comes from the old bargain-with-the-devil legend common to difficult medieval crossings. Ceret's version says the devil built the bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross it, only to be cheated when the townspeople sent an animal over first.
