Halles Castellane

19th-century covered food market in the heart of the old town

The covered market at the corner of Rue de la Loge and Rue des Étuves dates from the 1850s — a wrought-iron-and-glass hall in the spirit of the old Halles in Paris. Inside, around two dozen stalls sell oysters from the Bassin de Thau, Pic Saint-Loup wines, southern French cheeses, charcuterie, and produce from the Hérault.

It's also one of the best lunch spots in the centre — several stalls double as small bars with a few tables, and at midday the place fills up with locals slurping oysters and a glass of Picpoul. Open every morning except Mondays, with most stalls closing by 14:00.
