Les Halles de Nîmes is the daily covered market in a 1980s building next to the old town — open every morning, busiest on Saturdays. The stalls cover the produce of the Cévennes, the Camargue, and the Mediterranean: olives, anchovies, brandade de morue (salt cod), Camargue rice, taureau (bull meat) sausages, picholines, goat cheese from the garrigues.
A handful of small bars and bistros at the back serve breakfast and lunch with whatever the stallholders are also selling. It is the best place in town to assemble a picnic or to eat lunch at the counter alongside locals.
