Hôtel Jacques Coeur

The Hôtel Jacques Coeur is probably the most photographed facade in Pézenas — a late-Gothic and early Renaissance hybrid whose corbelled upper stories sprout gargoyles above a street that still looks much as it did in the 16th century. The building is named after the famous French merchant-banker Jacques Coeur, though its actual connection to him is more symbolic than biographical; what matters is the quality of the stonework, which is exceptional even by Pézenas standards.

Look closely at the carved details before moving on. The gargoyles are distinctive enough, but the corbelling and the interplay of Gothic verticals with early Renaissance horizontals reward a careful look. The building is on Rue Alfred Sabatier, one of the old town's main arteries, and works well as an anchor point for a broader wander through the quarter.
