One of the earliest Renaissance buildings in France, built at the end of the 15th century by Charles VIII who had recently returned from a campaign in Italy, dazzled by what he'd seen. The rooms contain a strong collection of period furniture. The gardens terrace above the Loire gives a view over the whole valley.
Château d'Amboise
Renaissance royal château with Leonardo da Vinci's tomb
A story
Leonardo da Vinci spent his last three years (1516–1519) working for Francois I at the nearby Clos Lucé, connected to the chateau by an underground passage. When he died, he was buried in the castle grounds; his tomb is in the Saint-Hubert chapel, a delicate Flamboyant Gothic building tucked into the castle gardens.
