Pont Jacques-Gabriel

18th-century stone bridge with the best view of the upper town

The Pont Jacques-Gabriel is the stone bridge that connects the two sides of the Loire at Blois, built between 1716 and 1724 after the medieval bridge collapsed. Eleven low arches, an obelisk at the centre topped by a small pyramid commemorating Louis XV, and steeply graded approaches mean the bridge is both a working road and a long, slightly theatrical viewpoint.

The view back at Blois from the middle of the bridge is the postcard angle: a tier of pale houses with red-tile roofs climbing to the château and the cathedral. Walk across, follow the south bank a hundred metres in either direction, and you get the same panorama in evening light, which is when it's at its best. There is a small staircase on the south side leading down to a riverside path.
