The Guérande peninsula is the obvious local trip — the walled medieval town of Guérande, the salt marshes around the Marais Salants, and the working fishing port of Le Croisic at the tip. To the east, Saint-Nazaire has the Submarine Base and the U-Boat Pen museum. Nantes, the regional capital, is an hour by train and has Les Machines de l'Île, the giant mechanical elephant.
