Castle of Brézé is one of the more unusual château visits near Saumur because so much of its drama is below ground. The estate combines a furnished château with a deep dry moat, troglodyte passages, wine cellars, kitchens, stables, and defensive spaces carved into the rock.
It is a strong half-day excursion for travelers who have already seen Saumur's main sights or want a Loire castle with a different feel. The underground sections make it especially memorable for families and architecture-minded visitors.
