This Romanesque church just below the château is the oldest in Saumur, dating in part to the early 12th century, and holds one of the finest collections of medieval and Renaissance tapestries in any French parish church. The pieces, displayed on the nave and choir walls, were largely gifts of King René of Anjou and later donors, and depict biblical scenes and the life of the Virgin.
The architecture itself rewards a careful look: a low, square nave with massive piers, simple barrel vaulting, and a few finely carved capitals around the apse. King Louis XI, who often stayed in the château, prayed here regularly. The church is open during the day in summer; opening times can be erratic out of season.
