Saumur's town hall began as a 16th-century private mansion, expanded in the 19th century with a striking neo-Gothic wing facing the Loire. The riverside facade — turrets, pinnacles, an open arcade at street level — is one of the most picturesque sights in the town, particularly when viewed from across the river or from one of the bridges.
The building is still in use as the working town hall but parts can be visited during European Heritage Days in September. The interior includes a council chamber with painted ceilings from the original Renaissance phase.
