Basilique Saint-Maurice

The Basilique Saint-Maurice is Epinal's main church, a sober mix of Romanesque and Gothic work in the old centre. Its scale is modest beside the great cathedrals of Lorraine, but the interior has the calm, thick-walled feeling of a frontier town church.

It is worth stepping inside while wandering between the river and the Place des Vosges. The basilica also anchors the oldest part of town, where narrow streets still show the shape of medieval Epinal.
