Epinal

Vosges foothills city on the Moselle, known for popular prints, river walks, and a ruined castle

Epinal sits on the Moselle at the foot of the Vosges, a practical little city with more charm than its industrial reputation suggests. It is best known for the bright popular prints called images d'Epinal, but the town itself is worth a stop: river walks, a ruined castle above the roofs, and a compact centre that makes a useful base before heading into the mountains.

Start with the Chateau d'Epinal, whose park gives the best view over the old town and the Moselle. Below it, the Basilique Saint-Maurice and the Place des Vosges keep the medieval core intact enough for a slow wander. The Musee de l'Image explains why Epinal's name travelled all over France.

The city is not flashy, and that is part of the appeal. You can eat simply, walk along the canal, and use the train station to reach Nancy, Remiremont, or the higher Vosges without fuss. If you are driving, Epinal is a sensible overnight between the Lorraine cities and the lakes and forests around Gerardmer.
