Epinal is at its best when you mix the old centre with the river and a little local history. Climb to the castle park for the view, visit the image museum for the town's most distinctive story, then walk back through Place des Vosges and the basilica. The lake at Bouzey and the Roman site of Grand make easy outings if you have a car.
