Getting Around

A car is essential. The battlefield sites, the country châteaux and Lac de Madine are all scattered across an agricultural plateau with limited public transport. The TGV station at Meuse–Lorraine TGV (Issoncourt), 25 km south-west of Verdun, brings travellers from Paris in 90 minutes; pick up a rental car there.

The main north–south axis is the D964, running along the Meuse valley from Stenay through Verdun to Saint-Mihiel. East–west, the A4 motorway crosses the department and is the route most travellers from Paris or Reims will arrive on. Distances are short — most of the major sites are within an hour's drive of Verdun.
