When to Go

Lorraine has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. May to September are the most reliable months for outdoor visits to the battlefields, Lac de Madine and the country châteaux. July and August are the warmest but rarely uncomfortable; the region is far from crowded even in peak season.

Late autumn has a particular feel — fog, bare trees, low sun — that suits the war memorials. The two centenaries — 2014–2018 for the First World War battles and 11 November each year for Armistice Day — are the busiest moments at Verdun and Douaumont. Winter is cold, often grey, and many smaller sites close from mid-November to Easter; Verdun itself stays open year-round.
