The Quartier Saint-Leu is the most picturesque corner of Amiens, a neighbourhood of old houses, cafes, and restaurants along the channels of the Somme immediately north of the cathedral. While most of Amiens was rebuilt after the wartime destruction, Saint-Leu survived relatively intact and retains its character as a working-class district that has gentrified gently over the past few decades.
The main streets — Rue du Don, Rue des Majots — are lined with restaurants and bars, many with terraces overlooking the water. In summer especially, this is where Amiens comes to eat and drink in the evenings. The Eglise Saint-Leu, a fifteenth-century Gothic church at the heart of the neighbourhood, faces one of the channels. The neighbourhood makes a pleasant destination after a long day at the cathedral.
