Calais rewards travellers who slow down rather than race through. The lace museum is genuinely excellent. The medieval tower and Rodin's sculpture are worth your time. The walk along the port and seafront — bleak on grey days, dramatic on sunny ones — gives you the feel of a city that has always had its face turned towards the sea and England beyond it.
