Jardin Anglais

Picturesque English garden added to the formal Le Nôtre park

Address Domaine de Chantilly, 60500 Chantilly

The English-style garden was laid out in the early 19th century by the architect Victor Dubois at the request of Louis-Henri-Joseph de Bourbon, Prince of Condé. It occupies the area immediately west of the Petit Château and stands in deliberate contrast to the formal geometric grids of Le Nôtre on the eastern side of the canal.

Winding paths follow the line of a small natural stream, opening onto romantic compositions: a small temple of love, a ruined arch, a grotto with an artificial waterfall, and a thatched cottage. The planting is dense — mature plane trees, beeches and limes — and the whole space feels separate from the rest of the domain.

The garden is included with the park ticket. Combined with the Hamlet just south of it, the western half of the domain rewards a slow afternoon walk.
