Église Notre-Dame d'Étretat

The parish church of Étretat is a quietly impressive 12th- and 13th-century Romanesque-Gothic building on a small rise just back from the seafront. The stone tower and the simple nave look older than they actually are — much of the visible structure is 19th-century restoration after damage in the Wars of Religion — but the proportions are right and the interior is striking, with a barrel-vaulted nave, plain stone walls, and a few good stained-glass windows.

Free entry, generally open during the day. Combine with a walk through the streets of half-timbered houses around it for a sense of pre-tourism Étretat — what is left of the small Normandy village this used to be.
