Oberkampf

Oberkampf is Paris's most reliable neighbourhood for a night out without pretension. Rue Oberkampf and the streets around it — Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, Rue Saint-Maur — are packed with bars that range from craft cocktail spots to divey corner cafés where a pint costs half what you'd pay in the Marais. The crowd skews young, creative, and local; this is where Parisians in their twenties and thirties actually go on a Friday night. By day the area is quieter but still interesting: good brunch places, independent record shops, and a scattering of vintage clothing stores. The neighbourhood sits on the border of the 11th arrondissement, close enough to République and the Canal Saint-Martin to combine into a longer walk. It's not a sightseeing destination — there are no monuments — but it's the best antidote to museum fatigue.
