Medieval Ramparts

Five kilometres of intact 14th-century walls ringing the old town

Avignon's 14th-century walls encircle the old town for nearly five kilometres, largely intact — one of the best-preserved sets of medieval fortifications in France. Walk a section of the ramparts for views over the Rhône and the surrounding plain. The walls were extensively restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc, the same architect responsible for Carcassonne.
