Les Colombières is a hillside villa and garden in the Garavan quarter of Menton, created by the painter and writer Ferdinand Bac between 1918 and 1927. Bac, who was rumoured to be an illegitimate grandson of Napoleon III, designed the garden as a series of themed terraces evoking ancient Greek and Roman landscapes, with cypress allées, stone fountains, and pergolas draped in wisteria.
The villa and gardens are privately owned and open only occasionally, but the exterior can be seen from the road and the garden occasionally appears on the programme for the annual Fête des Jardins. For visitors with a serious interest in historic gardens, it is worth checking whether a visit is possible during your stay.
