The Old Château Cemetery crowns the hill above Menton's old town, on the site of the former castle. It is a steep climb through narrow lanes, but the terraces at the top open to one of the best views in town: tiled roofs below, the harbour in front, Italy to one side and Cap Martin to the other.
The cemetery itself is part of the attraction. Foreign residents, local families, elaborate tombs, and weathered stone all sit in layers on the hillside, giving Menton's border-town history a human scale. Go slowly, both for the climb and for the atmosphere.
