Bakuriani Narrow-Gauge Railway

A charming Soviet-era narrow-gauge train climbing through mountain forests to the ski resort of Bakuriani

The narrow-gauge railway from Borjomi to Bakuriani, known locally as the Kukushka (cuckoo), is one of the most enjoyable railway journeys in the Caucasus. The train departs from Borjomi station and climbs through pine forest and mountain meadow to the ski resort of Bakuriani, about 35 kilometres away and 1,700 metres above sea level. The journey takes around two and a half to three hours in each direction.

Bakuriani itself is worth a visit in both winter (skiing and snowboarding) and summer (hiking, mountain biking). But for many travellers the train journey is reason enough — the slow pace, the mountain scenery, and the antique Soviet carriages make for a distinctive experience. Check current timetables in Borjomi before setting out; service frequency changes seasonally.

A story
The line was built between 1902 and 1928 and runs on a 760mm gauge — narrower than standard rail — using specialist mountain locomotives. It climbs over 1,000 metres in altitude through some 14 tunnels and across dozens of bridges. The journey that takes 20 minutes by road takes nearly three hours by train, but few people who ride it consider that a reason not to go.
