Qvevri Wine Tasting at Family Wineries

The most memorable wine experience in Kakheti is not at a commercial winery but at a family home. Georgian wine culture is built around the supra — the feast table — and an invitation into a Kakhetian house means sampling wine made in the family's own qvevri: clay vessels buried in the ground and sealed with beeswax, in which grapes ferment and age for months with extended skin contact. The result is amber-coloured, tannic, and completely unlike anything made by the same method elsewhere in the world.

Many families near Telavi, Kvareli, and Sighnaghi welcome visitors, either through formal agrotourism arrangements or simply through the hospitality that Georgians consider an obligation. Ask at your guesthouse. The wine will be poured into a horn (a ritual) and you will be expected to drain it (also a ritual). The tamada (toastmaster) will propose toasts — to Georgia, to your family, to peace. If you want to leave before midnight, you need to resist the second helping of churchkhela and the third bottle. Both are difficult.
