The Bertoldsbrunnen stands at the city's main crossroads where Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse meets Bertoldstrasse and Salzstrasse — the very centre of the old town and the busiest tram junction. The current bronze fountain, designed by Nikolaus Röslmeir in 1965, depicts a galloping rider thought to represent Berthold V, the last duke of Zähringen and founder of Freiburg in 1120.
This is the practical heart of the city. You will pass through here several times a day, whether you mean to or not, as four tram lines and most pedestrian routes converge on the spot. It is a useful landmark for meeting friends and for getting your bearings.
