The Schauinsland — literally "look into the country" — is the 1,284-metre peak of the Black Forest that rises directly above Freiburg to the south. On a clear day the view from the summit takes in the Vosges in France, the Swiss Alps with Mont Blanc, and the long line of the Black Forest stretching north. It is the easiest way for a visitor without a car to get into the high Black Forest.
The Bergstation cable car runs from Horben, a tram and bus ride south of the centre, up to just below the summit in about twenty minutes. From the top, walking trails of every length head off through the woods, and a mountain road winds down the back side to the picture-book village of Münstertal. The summit also has a small underground mining museum, on the site of the old silver workings.
