thyssenkrupp Test Tower

The thyssenkrupp test tower is a 246-metre concrete cylinder on the plateau above the old town, used by the company to test its next generation of elevators. It is the tallest building in Baden-Württemberg and impossible to miss from anywhere in the area.

A public viewing platform at 232 metres makes it Germany's highest, with views over the Schwarzwald to the east and on clear days a glimpse of the Alps to the south. A high-speed elevator reaches the platform in around 30 seconds. Tickets are around 10 euros; closed Mondays in winter.

A story
The tower was built in 2014–2017 to test magnetically-levitated elevators that can run sideways as well as up and down. To dampen the building's natural sway in the wind, a 240-tonne pendulum hangs from the top — itself doubling as a counterweight in the experiments.
