Black Forest Observatory

The Black Forest Observatory (Observatorium Schiltach) sits in the hills north of town, operated jointly by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Stuttgart. It is a working research facility rather than a public attraction, but it is an interesting piece of infrastructure to know about — a geophysical station buried deep in the hillside to minimise interference from surface vibration and weather.

The observatory monitors seismic waves, Earth tide deformations, and geomagnetic signals. Its deep shaft location makes it one of the most sensitive listening posts on the planet for Earth's interior activity. Occasional open days are held; check with the local tourist office for dates.

A story
The Black Forest Observatory records seismic data so precisely that it can detect earthquakes anywhere on Earth above magnitude 5.5. Its location in a disused mine shaft — 170 metres underground — gives it near-perfect isolation from surface vibrations, making it one of the quietest geophysical monitoring stations in the world.
