Willenburg

The Willenburg — also known locally as the Schlössle — is a ruined hilltop castle about 2.5 kilometres east of the town centre. The walk up takes roughly forty minutes from the market square through forest, and the reward is a pleasant ruin with good views back down the Schiltach valley and into the surrounding Black Forest hills.

The remains include the outline of the main tower and sections of curtain wall, now overgrown with moss and beech trees. It is an easy and largely unmarked walk — follow the Schiltach river upstream and then take the forested path up the eastern ridge. Best in the morning before the light shifts.

A story
The Willenburg was the seat of the Lords of Schiltach, who controlled the river trade through the valley in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The castle fell into disuse after the family line died out, and by the sixteenth century it was already being quarried for building stone by the townspeople below.
