A weathered medieval castle on a hilltop south of the city, the tallest of Bamberg's seven hills at 387 metres. First mentioned in 1109, it was for centuries the seat and last-ditch refuge of the prince-bishops; the poet E.T.A. Hoffmann lived for a while in one of the outbuildings. A solid keep, a knot of half-timbered courtyard buildings, and a restaurant in the gatehouse with one of the city's best views. Reachable on foot in around forty minutes up through the vineyards.
